GLASSBORO, N.J. – Rowan University outscored the University of New England 28-10 in the second half on its way to a 38-20 victory in non-conference football action to end the regular season on Friday night.
Mike Husni was 10-of-16 through the air for 196 yards and three touchdowns. Husni also added 107 yards on the ground. John Maldonando hauled in a 65-yard touchdown to put the Profs ahead for good in the third quarter. He finished with five catches for 139 yards and two scores. James Fara ran for 133 yards including a 60-yard touchdown.
Jarrett Henault had 173 yards and a touchdown through the air and also rushed for 54 yards in the loss for UNE.
Jack Mahoney had 58 rushing yards and a touchdown. Shane LaPort caught four passes for 58 yards and a touchdown.
Jaymeson Maheux had five catches for 49 yards.
The teams traded points in the first half and the game was tied 10-10 at the break. Rowan struck first, using a long 13-play, 84-yard drive to start the game. Fara rushed in from two yards out to put the Profs in front 7-0 at the 7:10 mark of the first quarter. Robert Inniss nailed a 35-yard field goal with 2:22 to play in the quarter to cut the deficit to 7-3.
Rowan added three points on a 41-yard field goal by Jake Hurler to start the second quarter. Henault connected with LaPorte for a 22-yard touchdown on fourth down with 6:30 to go to tie the game 10-10. The two hooked up for an 18-yard pass earlier in the drive. Mahoney also ran for 21 yards on the scoring drive.
The Profs looked like they were going to take the lead heading into halftime after Fara ripped off a 60-yard rush down to the UNE five-yard line with 1:25 to play.
Trey Snowden made the touchdown-saving tackle. The Nor'easter defense stood its ground and stopped Rowan on two chances from the 1-yard like to keep the game tied at the half.
Henault was intercepted by John Perez to start the second half. Three plays later Husni found Maldonado for a 26-yard touchdown to put Rowan back in front 17-10. UNE answered with a long drive finished with a 1-yard touchdown run by Mahoney to tie the game at 17-17 with 5:53 to play in the third quarter.
Husni and Maldonado linked up for a 65-yard touchdown on the first play of the Profs' next drive to put the hosts in front for good. Inniss made is second field goal of the game, this time for 31-yards out to trim the deficit to 24-20 to start the fourth quarter.
UNE would be unable to draw any closer. CJ Barrett caught a 24-yard touchdown with 6:41 to play to give Rowan its largest lead to that point at 31-20. Kyrin Rhone added a five-yard touchdown run with 2:06 left to put the game out of reach.
Mike Mascioli led the Rowan defense with 14 tackles (five solo). Nick Cerulli added six tackles. Javen Cuff had a sack and three tackles.
Keegan Stanton-Meas led the Nor'easter defense with 10 tackles (three solo) and one for a loss.
Nick Lombard had eight stops.
Will Michaud and
Zach Beauvais each added seven tackles.
The Nor'easters finish the season at 5-5. Rowan stands at 7-3 overall.
