Husson retains Lobster Trap with 31-14 victory over UNE

BANGOR, Maine – Husson University defeated the University of New England, 31-14, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) football matchup on Saturday afternoon to claim the Lobster Trap in the second annual meeting between the teams for the trophy.

Nic Visser complete 30-of-40 passes for 352 yards and two scores and also added a game-high 58 yards on the ground. Tyler Thompson grabbed seven catches for 87 yards and a touchdown in the victory. Jarrett Henault had 189 yard passing with three interceptions and led UNE on the ground with 49 yards and two touchdowns.

Husson used 10 plays to drive down the field on their first possession and Jed Lober ran in from 10 yards out to put the Eagles in front 7-0 early. The Nor'easters answered quickly as Henault rushed in for a 1-yard touchdown to tie the game with 6:22 to play in the first quarter.

Mike Lemay intercepted Visser in UNE territory and returned it 29 yards down to the Husson 45-yard line. A personal foul penalty setup the Nor'easters in great field position with 2:49 remaining in the first quarter. Henault completed two passes to Mikey Brennan as UNE pushed down the field, but was picked off by Marquise Jackson on the two-yard line to end the threat.

UNE returned the favor as Nate Reid recovered a fumble by Visser on the Nor'easter 11-yard line to keep the game tied 7-7 midway through the second quarter. The Nor'easters were forced to punt on their next possession. Husson drove down the field and Aaron Paradis connected on a 21-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the half to put the hosts in front 10-7 at the break.

Neither team could put points on the board to start the third quarter. Paradis missed a 31-yard field goal for the Eagles. UNE was unable to convert on a fourth-and-five on the Husson end of the field with its next possession.

The Eagles converted on a third-and-long their next time down the field as Visser completed a 29-yard pass to Walker Lenz. He followed with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Thompson to extend the lead to 17-7 at the 2:46 mark of the third.
Husson held possession for most of the fourth quarter, beginning with a 16-play, 96-yard drive that took 8:26. Visser found Cullen Casey for an eight-yard score to cap the drive and make it 24-7 in favor of the Eagles.

UNE wouldn't go away and scored on its next time down the field. Henault hit long passes to Shane Laporte (23 yards), Jack Mahoney (23 yards), and Jakob Rivers (14 yards) before running in from eight yards out trim the lead to 10 to 4:53 to play.

After an unsuccessful onside kick, the Nor'easters forced a Husson punt, but on the ensuing drive Henault was picked off on a deep pass. He also threw a late pick six to Tucker Buzzell for the final score.

The Eagles nearly doubled the Nor'easters in total offense at 485-262 on the day and were also 12-of-17 on third down conversions to just 1-of-6 for UNE.

Nick Lombard led UNE with 15 tackles (seven solo). Will Peters had six tackles, two for loss, and a sack. Buzzell had 10 tackles, two for a loss, and an interception for the Eagles.

UNE visits Nichols next Saturday (Oct. 15) at 1 p.m.
