Bazin lifts Nor'easters past Hawks in 2OT, 2-1

Statistics

BRISTOL, R.I. -- Grace Bazin scored 1:32 into double overtime as the University of New England secured a key Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey victory, 2-1, against Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 8) at Bayside Field.

After carrying possession between defenders from the midfield into the attacking zone, Bazin repositioned herself with back to goal on the right side. The ball was sent over Sarah Padellaro on the edge of the arc for a pass down to Bazin, who turned with her second touch to slot the game-winner inside the near post.

The Nor'easters (6-6) stay atop the league standings with the result, now at 4-0. It was the first game this season past regulation for UNE, which moved to 18-0 all-time versus RWU -- although two of the last four meetings have seen a 2OT outcome.

The match almost didn't make it to a sixth period, but a sliding stop by Lindsay Pych -- well out of her crease -- on a breakaway chance by the Hawks' Kelly Doherty as time expired in the first overtime kept things going. Pych was busy in OT, logging seven of her 17 saves during the session.

Following an early 2nd-quarter score by RWU's Elizabeth Duquette, the Nor'easters trailed for more than 30 minutes -- and without a credited shot attempt for 40 minutes. But the visitors upped the pressure in the 4th, gaining seven penalty corners, and finally broke through in the 50th minute when Madi Robito batted home a bouncing cross right in front. Kate Lindmark started the corner play and had it passed back to her before pushing the ball into the middle.

While UNE finished with a 12-9 edge in corners, the Hawks amassed a 29-9 advantage in total shots. On the opposite side from Pych, Jill Haudenshield made six saves for Roger Williams.

The Nor'easters will have to rest quickly, as they visit Wheaton College on Sunday at noon.
