NORTON, Mass. -- The University of New England converted its first two shootout attempts and
Lindsay Pych shut the door on Wheaton College (Mass.) from there as the Nor'easters notched a 1-0 field hockey result (2-0 SO) at Nordin Field on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 9).
Less the 24 hours after the first overtime action of the season, the Nor'easters went the full 80 minutes and beyond to move over the .500 mark to 7-6 on the year. The last time UNE had participated in a shootout was 2017.
Once
Shelly Tremblay and
Kate Lindmark found the back of the net to give the visitors an early lead in the best-of-five series, Pych held her ground to stop all four chances by the Lyons to seal the victory.
The Nor'easters controlled much of the play throughout the contest, aside from occasional spurts by Wheaton. Total shots ended at 20-9, and penalty corners at 16-5. The Lyons managed to withstand heavy pressure in the 4th quarter and 1st overtime periods, when UNE stacked up 10 more shots (13-3) and nine more corners (12-3) than the hosts.
Pych made four official saves for her second shutout of 2022, including a key denial with 17 seconds remaining in double overtime. She and the UNE defense did not yield a goal in the last 134-plus minutes of the weekend.
The Nor'easters get a welcomed two days of rest before visiting No.4 Tufts University on Wednesday.
For Wheaton (3-10), which is led by former UNE midfielder Brooke Marshall '17, Emma Lapreziosa also earned a shutout with 11 saves defending the Lyons' goal.
