Maine Maritime tops Nor'easters in three sets

Statistics

CASTINE, Maine -- Rachel Melampy chalked up 15 kills and hit at a .500 clip to guide Maine Maritime Academy in a 3-0 result (25-19, 25-21, 25-9) against the University of New England in women's volleyball action from Smith Gymnasium on Friday evening (Oct. 7).

The Mariners started the year with nine consecutive wins, including a four-set decision versus UNE back on September 3, and now stand 12-2 overall.

Melampy also had three service aces and totaled 18.5 points for the hosts. Ila Smith added six kills, helped by the 31 assists from Katie Albritton. Hunnie Zuber-Stephens and Riley Sullivan each accounted for nine digs.

The Nor'easters (4-11) received four kills out of both Olivia Hand and Viktoria Pavlyuk. Addie Miller dropped in a match-best five aces, and recorded 11 assists, which moved the sophomore over 1,000 midway through her second season. In the previous 25 years of the program, nine individuals achieved that career milestone within the UNE offense.

MMA led all the way through the opening set, though a seven-serve run by Miller and UNE cut the deficit to 23-19 late. Things were much closer in the 2nd, with four lead-changes and 10 ties. The Nor'easters were ahead 14-11, only to see a 12-4 stretch flip the script (23-18). An ace by Miller trimmed it to 23-21, but a block by Albritton and Smith ultimately sealed the set. The Mariners then got off to a quick start in the 3rd and never looked back.

UNE will return home for three matches next week, beginning with Lesley University on Monday (7 p.m.).
