BIDDEFORD, Maine – Western New England University scored three unanswered goals to defeat the University of New England, 3-1, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup on Saturday afternoon at Blue Storm Stadium.
The Golden Bears (9-4-1, 4-1-1 CCC) remain in a share of first place in the conference with the victory. It marked the first conference loss for the Nor'easters (7-4-3, 2-1-3 CCC) this season.
UNE struck first with a penalty kick goal by
Marie Hoehner in the 19

Watch]. The kick was awarded after
Lizzie Frattaroli was tripped by the Golden Bears' goalkeeper in the box.
Malina LaCapra buried a free kick from 25 yards out into the top-left corner of the goal to tie the game in the 22
nd minute. The score would remain 1-1 at the half.
Western New England took the lead in the 60th minute as Allison Bruehwiler touched in a cross from Samantha Vitka in the box. Isabella Montalvo also assisted on the go-ahead goal. Gabby Sansone kicked in another perfectly-placed free kick from LaCapra just off the outstretched hands of
Sydney Gillingham in the 78
th minute.
The Golden Bears outshot the Nor'easters 11-8 overall and 6-3 on goal. Gillingham had three saves for UNE. Molly McLaughlin earned the victory in net with one save.
UNE visits Wentworth on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
