#5 Jumbos finish strong to top UNE, 3-1

Statistics

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Mia D'Angelo tallied her second goal of the contest just three minutes after the game became tied in the 4th quarter, as No.5 Tufts University went on to a 3-1 decision over the University of New England in field hockey action Wednesday evening (Oct. 12) at Ounjian Field.

After starting the season with seven straight wins, the result moves the Jumbos to 9-3 overall. The Nor'easters dip back to 7-7 on the year, with six of those setbacks to nationally-ranked foes.

D'Angelo put the hosts on the board in the latter stages of the 1st period, but that was the only chance that solved the Lindsay Pych and the UNE defense through 45 minutes, despite persistent pressure from Tufts. At that point, total shots were 23-0 and penalty corners were 10-0. Lauren Green supported the visiting cause with a defensive save late in the 2nd frame.

The Nor'easters earned their first set piece in the 50th minute and made good on it, knotting things up with the fourth goal of the year by Kate Lindmark from just off the left post.

However, the Jumbos restored their advantage in the 53rd minute, when D'Angelo put a fractional redirection around the goalie on a hit by Andrea DelGiudice from outside the circle. Less than two minutes later, Rachel Scrivanich swept home an end-line feed from Kylie Rosenquest for some more breathing room.

UNE came right back with a second corner opportunity, but couldn't generate another shot.

Pych denied several point-blank tries over the course of the busy night and wrapped up with 12 saves. For Tufts, Sam Gibby recorded the victory between the pipes.

The Nor'easters will play in Biddeford for the first time in over two weeks on Saturday (12 p.m.), welcoming in Gordon College for a Commonwealth Coast Conference match.
