EVERETT, Mass. – #12 University of New England outscored Wentworth Institute of Technology by a 4-1 margin in the third period as it rallied for a 6-4 victory in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's hockey matchup on Friday night.
Kevin Obssuth got things started with a goal 6:35 into the night. He was one of three Leopards who tallied a goal and an assist on the evening.
Chris Jones scored a power-play goal and
Ryan Kuzmich added his first of the night as the Nor'easters (10-2-1, 9-2-1 CCC) responded to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Wentworth (4-12-2, 3-10-1 CCC) grabbed the lead back with two goals in the second period. George Weiner put back a rebound to tie the game 2-2 with a power-play marker at the 9:19 mark of the frame. The Leopards regained the lead later in the period on a goal by Charlie Reid.
Kuzmich knotted the score once again with his second of the game just 32 seconds into the final period.
Jake Fuss provided assists on the first three goals for UNE. Wentworth was able to grab a 4-3 advantage just over four minutes later as Jake McKenelley put in a goal for the hosts.
The Nor'easters were able to shut the door from there, scoring the final three goals of the night.
Jimmy Elser tied the game at 4-4 at the midway mark of the third.
Liam Darcy found
Jared Christy for the game-winner on a power-play with 4:44 remaining. Wentworth nearly tied the game with 2:09 left, but a goal was called off due to a high stick. Fuss added his fourth point of the night, an empty net goal, in the final minute to put the game out of reach.
UNE outshot Wentworth 37-22 overall, including a 15-4 margin in the third period. Will Oliver had 31 saves in the loss while
Billy Girard IV made 18 saves to backstop the victory.
The Nor'easters return to the ice on Monday night at home against Salve Regina at 6 p.m.
