BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Jakigh Dottin, Matthew Alectus, and Jaekwon Spencer combined for 76 points as Nichols College topped the University of New England, 102-75, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball action Saturday afternoon (Jan. 22) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Bison improve 13-2 overall and 6-2 in league matches, while the Nor'easters set back to 3-13 on the year (2-8 CCC).
Dottin led all scorers with 29, largely behind 12-of-16 shooting from the field, and added eight assists. Alectus knocked down 5-of-7 from deep and totaled 25 points. Spencer put up 22 points, 12 rebounds, and six blocks. Matt Morrow contributed 13 points and a game-high 13 caroms, powering a 52-35 edge on the boards. Tahmeen Depuree provided eight assists in the contest, factoring significantly as Nichols dished out 16 helpers on 19 2nd-half baskets.
The visitors hit 52 percent (37-for-71) from the floor on the day, tallying 54 points in the paint and tacking on another 22 in transition. Meanwhile, UNE connected at a 37 percent clip (28-for-75) on field goal tries.
Alex Kravchuk notched 25 points and seven rebounds for the Nor'easters -- since the turn of the new year, he is averaging 29.0 points (7 games).
Drake Gavin registered 13 points and three steals, and
Zach Boulay tossed in 11 points off the bench.
Anthony Senesombath supported with nine points, and
Ric Castillo controlled a team-best 10 rebounds.
UNE grabbed the advantage early on, racing out to a 13-3 lead just over three minutes in. The gap was still 10 (21-11) at the 12:41 mark, as the hosts drained 5-of-10 three-pointers to that moment. But Nichols found its stride over the next portion, rattling off 14 unanswered in less than four minutes to take over for good (25-21). Another 12 in-a-row in short order pushed the spread up to 37-23 with 5:52 on the clock.
Consecutive triples from Kravchuk and Boulay trimmed a 15-point deficit into single digits (45-36), and the Bison were ahead 49-38 at the break. UNE shaved some more off during the initial stages of the 2nd to get within 54-48, however a 16-5 stretch by Nichols padded the margin (70-53) beyond recovery.
The Nor'easters will wrap up what turned into a five-game home stand on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) against Endicott College (6-2 CCC).
