BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Salve Regina University held off a late University of New England rally attempt to pick up a 66-56 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball result on Monday evening (Jan. 17) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
After starting the year 1-5 in non-league matches, the Seahawks (6-6) have since gone 5-1 in conference outings. The Nor'easters (8-7) fall for the second game in-a-row, back to 6-2 in CCC action.
Ashley Rourke paced the visitors with 16 points, and Amanda Folan tossed in 13. Megan Henaghan put up 12 points, nine rebounds, four blocks, and three steals. Morgan Shuey contributed 10 points and five assists for Salve, which connected at a 41 percent clip (24-for-59) on the night.
Jordyn Franzen topped all players with a double-double of 24 points and 10 boards. UNE received 14 points out of
Kaylee Beyor, while
Abby Cavallaro went for eight points, four assists, four steals, and three blocks. The hosts only hit 31 percent from the floor (22-of-72).
The Nor'easters assumed their largest edge (7-3) with seven straight at the start, but trailed 20-19 through 10 minutes. The Seahawks worked the spread to 33-26 in the 2nd before settling on 35-30 at the midway mark, in spite of 11 turnovers prior to halftime.
In the 3rd, UNE reduced the deficit to one possession on multiple occasions, but was hampered by seven turnovers as the margin remained five (49-44) entering the 4th. It was 51-46 until Henaghan and Shuey combined for nine straight, building the SRU cushion into double digits (60-46) with 4:35 left on the clock.
The home side didn't go easily, though, stringing together a 10-1 run in less than three minutes to slice the gap to 61-56. A Seahawks turnover left UNE an opportunity to take off more, but the ensuing shot rimmed out and Rourke drained a three-pointer back the other direction to all but seal it with 60 seconds remaining.Â
The Nor'easters are slated to entertain Wentworth Institute of Technology (0-5 CCC) on Wednesday (5:30 p.m.).
