WESTFIELD, Mass. – Jayjay Evoborokhai scored in the 81st minute and made a game-saving defensive stop in the final seconds as Westfield State University held on to defeat the University of New England, 1-0, in men's soccer action on Tuesday evening at Alumni Field.
UNE (1-6) was awarded a free kick from close range just outside the box with 42 seconds left.
Karl Mohr sent in a cross off that was headed to the foot of
Alex Woodworth. Woodworth's shot hit the bottom of the crossbar and he attempted to head in his rebound, but Evobarokhai was there to make the defensive save and end the threat for the Owls.
Coleby Andrade's long-range shot from near midfield hit the crossbar and Evoborokhai was there to head in the rebound for the game's lone goal.
After a slow first half with just nine combined shots, favoring UNE 5-4, the second half had much more action as the Owls (3-4) outshot the Nor'easters in the period, 13-6.
Ollie Hammond made two saves in the loss. Emilio Mancuso earned the shutout without a save.
UNE returns to Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday at home against Gordon at 12 p.m.
