UNE blanks Saint Joseph’s, 2-0, to start season

STANDISH, Maine Sydney Gillingham made five saves as the University of New England shut out Saint Joseph's, 2-0, in its season opener on the road Wednesday night.
 
Olivia King opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the final minute of the first half. Morgan Diefenbach made the most of her first game in a Nor'easter uniform, extending the lead to 2-0 in the 76th minute.
 
Gillingham made four of her saves in the second half to help preserve the clean sheet. The Monks held a 16-11 advantage in shots, but UNE had more on goal with nine to just five for the hosts.
 
The Nor'easters are on the road Friday night at Thomas College at 7 p.m.
