WENHAM, Mass. -- The University of New England plated five runs in the top of the 3rd frame during game two of Wednesday's (Apr. 28) softball doubleheader at Gordon College, on the way to an 8-3 victory. The Fighting Scots took the opener in six innings, 8-0.
The Nor'easters (6-5, 4-3 CCC) will now head for Endicott College on Saturday (12 p.m.) as the 2021 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Softball Championship begins. The logistics of this unique year split the 10-team league into two pods for scheduling, and the top two teams in winning percentage from each group will play a best-of-3 series in the semifinals.
[Official Pairings]Â Gordon's campaign comes to a close with an 11-14 overall mark, 7-7 in CCC action.
UNE and Endicott (15-2, 11-1 CCC) were lined up to play six times during the initial weekend of the season, but none of those games were contested. The teams have not met since the title round of the 2019 tournament.
Grace Tutt extended her season-long hitting streak to 11 games on Wednesday.
The Fighting Scots carried the momentum from game one into
GAME 2 (UNE 8-3)Â and got two runs on the board in the last half of the 2nd inning. Arianna Ramsaran led off with a home run, and then Laura Bieren scored for the first time after a hit, an out, and an RBI-single by Gabby Hunt.
The Nor'easters answered right back, though, scoring three times with one away to take the lead for good. A single from
Alie Martell and walk by
Taylor Depot set the stage for a two-run double by
Tutt, and
Kate Wilmot followed with an RBI-single. The second out, an error, and a walk led to a
Kylie Lavallee RBI-single, and then a bases-loaded walk by
Becca Dumont set the spread at 5-2.
Bieren's second hit (double) began the 4th for Gordon, and a Kristen Brown double on the next play made it 5-3. But UNE responded, again, with two more in the top of the 6th.
Tina LeBlanc walked and stole second, and a double by
Nicole Cacciola -- her second hit -- sent LeBlanc around. Cacciola later scored on a wild pitch.
Three consecutive two-out singles from Tutt, Wilmot, and LeBlanc tacked on another in the 6th.
Alie Martell retired six of the last seven Gordon batters to finished off the win in the circle. Brown took the loss for the hosts.
Lily Rivera got the Fighting Scots started in
GAME1 (GC 8-0) with a one-out RBI-double in the bottom of the 3rd inning. A wild pitch and sacrifice fly added runs, before Bieren homered to establish a 4-0 cushion.
That was all the support Mara Little needed in the circle to secure an eighth positive decision. The shutout included two strikeouts, no walks, and just four hits --
Dumont's second of the match with two gone in the 6th was the only blemish for Little over the final three frames.
Rivera led off the 5th with a home run of her own, and an RBI-single later from Emma Dubois made it 7-0. Rivera notched a sacrifice fly in the 6th to end things early.
Emily Harms joined Rivera and Bieren with multiple hits in the game for Gordon.
Jordan Strum absorded the setback in the circle for UNE.
Erika Noftall also saw her first action of the season with a couple innings of work in the middle.
