WENHAM, Mass. -- The University of New England secured a pair of key Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) results at Gordon College on Saturday (Apr. 24), defeating the Fighting Scots, 4-3, in eight innings before a wire-to-wire 7-1 victory in game two.
The Nor'easters (5-2) solidify their second position in the pod standings at 4-1, as the top two teams meeting the minimum number of total games played will advance to the postseason based on conference winning percentages. Gordon drops to 8-13 overall and 5-7 in CCC action.
The squads will have a short turnaround before taking to Nor'easter Diamond on Sunday morning (10 a.m.).
The Scots used a combined four errors to get three runs between the 1st and 3rd innings of
GAME 1 (UNE 4-3), around an RBI-groundout by
Alie Martell in the 2nd. It was still 3-1 heading into the 7th and Martell was on second with two away before a
Makenzy Herron single and a game-tying double to right-center by
Taylor Depot.
Grace Tutt put UNE ahead in the 8th with a sacrifice fly. Gordon had a runner at third with one down in its last chance, but was called for interference obstructing a fielder from getting to a foul ball.
Jordan Strum struck out her ninth batter of the game to seal the win.
Strum was not charged an earned run while allowing five hits and one walk. Tutt and
Kate Wilmot topped the offense with two hits each.
Arianna Ramsaran led the Scots with two hits. Mara Little took the loss with two strikeouts.
The Nor'easters struck early in the
GAME 2 (UNE 7-1), building a 4-0 prior to the home side getting its first at-bat. A run-scoring double from Tutt followed by an RBI-single from Wilmot got things going, and shortly after a walk by
Megan Chamberlain, an error allowed the next two runs to cross.
A lead-off single by Hatchell and walk of Little in the bottom of the 1st looked to answer right back for Gordon, but then consecutive outs closed the window some. The hosts did manage to put one on the board with a Laura Bieren RBI-single to plate Hatchell.
The Fighting Scots left potential runs at second and third in the 3rd, and the Nor'easters stranded a pair in scoring position with one gone in the 4th. UNE added to its 4-1 advantage in the 7th aftter a lead-off hit from
Becca Dumont, as Chamberlain and
Liz Scheurich had RBI-singles.
Chamberlain posted a team-high two hits, and was joined by Dumont and WIlmot touching home twice. Wilmot fanned a couple in the circle to pick up her second positive result in as many outings.
Hatchell and Emily Harms accounted for four of the five hits for Gordon. Kristen Brown took the loss, giving up eight hits and four free passes.
