Rams edge UNE in opener, 2-1; game two halted

Game 1 Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Just a half inning after conceding the first run of the day, Suffolk University plated two runs in the top of the 6th to take a 2-1 decision against the University of New England in game one of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball doubleheader on Wednesday (Apr. 21) at Nor'easter Diamond. Game two was halted due to weather in the bottom of the 4th inning, with the Rams holding a 7-6 advantage.

Suffolk (10-15, 6-7 CCC) bounced back from a couple losses on Tuesday, when UNE (3-2, 2-1 CCC) racked up a combined 25 hits and 19 runs.

The Nor'easters were unable to convert back-to-back, two-out singles by Alie Martell and Taylor Depot into any runs in the 3rd inning of GAME 1 (SUF 2-1), and the Rams stranded runners at first and third in the 4th. UNE did strike in the 5th, though, when Depot put a hard-hit ball through the right side to score Kylie Lavallee.

In the next at-bat, a one-out single from Ally Cifaratta was followed by a double to the wall in left-center by Ashley Zulla. Brooke Cloak tied things up with an infield single that tipped off the pitcher's glove, and then Savannah Scripter provided the deciding tally with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Zulla.

Constance Phelan earned her sixth win in the circle, striking out four against five hits and a free pass. Scripter accounted for two of Suffolk's five hits.

Jordan Strum fanned five in the setback.

The start to GAME 2 was quite the opposite, as UNE capitalized on two Suffolk errors en route to five 1st-inning runs, and the hosts didn't even have a base runner until after the second out. Nicole Cacciola and Liz Scheurich had the only runs batted in with infield singles for the Nor'easters.

That spread only lasted a few minutes, as the Rams countered with three in the 2nd. With one on and two away, Leina Belog worked an 11-pitch walk to keep things going. Ida Boci followed with an RBI-single, and stole second to put a couple in scoring position for Caitlin Murphy, who landed a single on the right-field line to knock in both runners.

Depot made it 6-3 in the 2nd by way of a lead-off single and error, and a pair of wild pitches. UNE put two more on bases before an out was recorded, but could not add to the cushion.

Suffolk continued to rally in the 3rd and ultimately grabbed the lead at 7-6. Zulla doubled, Cloak singled and stole second, and Scripter brought both home with a single up the middle. After a pitching change from Alyssa Wilson to Strum and the first out, Belog cracked a home run inside the left-field pole to vault the visitors in front. The next two batters reached, as well, but Strum managed to keep the Rams from any more.

A double play, with runners at the corners, got the Nor'easters off the field in the 4th, and the home squad began the threaten before play was suspended. Depot singled, advanced on a wild pitch, and stole third. Makenzy Herron drew a walk, and that's where things stand with no outs. Game 2 Statistics
