EAST BOSTON, Mass. -- Kate Wilmot amassed eight runs batted in over the course of two victories for the University of New England against Suffolk University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball action Tuesday (Apr. 20) at East Boston Memorial Park. The Nor'easters scored a bunch late in the opener for an 8-0 win, and built off a couple early blasts by Wilmot in the nightcap for an 11-7 triumph.

UNE improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in games counting towards the league standings. The Rams will bring their 9-15 mark (5-7 CCC) up to Biddeford on Wednesday (3 p.m.) for another conference twinbill.

Eight different Nor'easters had multiple hits on the day, topped by four apiece from Grace Tutt, Megan Chamberlain (also a team-best 4 runs), and Makenzy Herron.

Jordan Strum delivered a four-hit shutout for the visitors in GAME 1 (UNE 8-0), whiffing two without walking any walks (1 hit-by-pitch).

After failing to get on the board with the double that started the contest, UNE put one across in the 2nd. A lead-off single from Nicole Cacciola eventually scored on a Taylor Depot fielder's choice.

The 1-0 margin held until the 5th, when Tutt tripled to drive in Alie Martell and Chamberlain, who both reached with singles. Wilmot followed with an RBI-double to make it 4-0. Strum managed to navigate out of the bottom of the frame, as Suffolk had a pair of singles before the initial out.

The Nor'easters doubled the cushion in the 7th, as the first four batters singled (Depot, Herron, Chamberlain, Tutt). Wilmot knocked in the sixth run with a sacrifice fly, and, after the second out, Kylie Lavallee plated two more with a single.

Constance Phelan struck out five and surrendered four earned runs over six innings for the Rams, who received two of their hits from Brooke Cloak.

Wilmot drew the pitching assignment in GAME 2 (UNE 11-7), and helped herself to a lead before setting foot in the circle. After an RBI-double from Chamberlain, scoring Herron, Wilmot launched a two-run shot for a 3-0 advantage.

Then, the bases were juiced for Wilmot in the 3rd, setting up UNE's first grand slam since 2016. The pair of home runs in one game hadn't happened for a Nor'easter slugger in seven years.

A second double-play in the span of three innings pushed the 7-0 spread into the last half of the 4th, when Suffolk got three back. Five singles before the second out of the stanza chipped away at the deficit.

The Nor'easters continued to find success off Rams' pitcher Kennedy Reyes, though, as the lead slowly reached eight (11-3) during the final three at-bats. Lavallee singled in Tutt for one in the 5th, an error aided one in the 6th, and a miscue contributed to the first run in the 7th. An RBI-single by Herron tacked on another, and UNE left them loaded looking for more.

Suffolk didn't go down easily in its last chance. A lead-off double by Caitlin Murphy produced a run on a sacrifice fly two batters later. Cloak drove in her second run of the match with a groundout, and then Savannah Scripter put a two-run homer over the fence in center. The Rams equaled UNE's 13 hits in the game, with three from Scripter and three by Hailey Cockroft, who touched home a couple times. Ally Cifaratta added two hits.

Herron topped the Nor'easters lineup with three hits in the game, and Cacciola was one of four with a pair. Wilmot recorded three strikeouts from the circle.

In the losing effort, Reyes conceded eight earned runs while fanning three, as well.
