BIDDEFORD, Maine --
Avery DeBrito and the University of New England men's basketball team scored 14 unanswered points inside the final four minutes and picked up a 69-60 victory over the University of Maine-Augusta on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 28) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
After a three-pointer gave the Moose a 58-55 edge with 4:34 to go, DeBrito evened things with a triple of his own at the 3:42 mark. Another trey by DeBrito with 2:01 on the clock made it 62-58, and he was one of five players to add free throws in the waning moments as the lead briefly expanded to 11.
While the Nor'easters (1-3) went on their closing run, the Moose (2-1) missed nine straight field goal tries and turned it over once.
Alex Kravchuk totaled a game-high 22 points for UNE, which had a 13-point advantage at the charity stripe (18-5). DeBrito went for 13 points, a match-best nine rebounds, and four assists.
Ryan Lin also recorded 13 points, and
Jordan Bagshaw chipped in with nine.
The Nor'easters shot 42 percent (22-of-52) from the floor, and UMaine Augusta connected at a 33 percent clip (23-for-69).
The Moose received 16 points from Jovan Sisovic, 14 out of Elijah Smith, and 10 from Jalaughn Jackson. Sam Martin contributed six points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
Aside from an 8-0 spurt by UNE during the initial portion of the 1st half -- which gave the hosts a 15-8 cushion -- the gap between the teams was no more than four, either way, until the deciding stretch. The game featured 20 lead-changes and eight ties.
