Fast start propels Mariners over UNE, 82-68

CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime Academy scored the game's first eight points and raced out to a 16-point lead midway through the 1st half, on the way to an 82-68 decision versus the University of New England men's basketball team on Monday evening (Nov. 15) at Smith Gymnasium.

With the last five points of the opening frame, the Nor'easters closed the gap to eight (38-30). Five quick ones early in the 2nd had the deficit down to three (45-42), but the Mariners had the spread back up to 10 (58-48) with less than nine minutes to go.

Four players in double digits supplied the majority of scoring for MMA (1-3). Markus Ramirez hit 5-of-8 from downtown en route to 23 points, which was matched by Malachi Reincke. Carter Rubin also knocked down five treys to end with 20 points, and collected 13 rebounds. Cameron Gerlach put together a triple-double of 12 points, 12 caroms, and 11 assists.

Ray Evans guided UNE (0-4) with 20 points and six boards. Ric Castillo chipped in with 16 points and nine rebounds. Off the bench, Michael Quinn tossed in 13 points, and James DeCrisantis went for nine points with six assists.

Maine Maritime overcame 20 turnovers by shooting 46 percent from the floor (27-for-59), and had a 43-29 advantage on the glass. On the other side, the Nor'easters connected at a 35 percent clip (26-of-74).

UNE returns home to entertain Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Thursday (7:30 p.m.).
