BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Trailing by as many as 11 in the 3rd quarter, and seven in the 4th, No.13 Bowdoin College ran off a 20-5 run to come away with a 61-52 women's basketball result against the University of New England as the 2021 Nor'easter Tip-Off Classic wrapped up Sunday (Nov. 14) on Court Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
For the Polar Bears (2-0), Sydney Jones knocked down five three-pointers and led all players with 23 points, to go with nine rebounds and four steals. Annie Boasberg scored 11 after halftime to end with 14, while securing a game-high 12 boards and three blocks. Tori Beck and Jai Duval each contributed seven points, and combined for all of their nine rebounds on the offensive glass.
Bowdoin shot 28 percent in the contest (22-for-78), but overcame that by amassing 31 offensive rebounds which produced a 27-12 advantage in second-chance points. The visitors also had the edge in points off turnovers, at 19-8. Overall, the Polar Bears controlled the boards by a 55-35 margin.
The Nor'easters (0-3) received 21 points and nine rebounds out of
Jordyn Franzen.
Abby Cavallaro netted four treys to total 14 points, and
Kaylee Beyor added nine.
Sierra Tartre dished out six assists for the hosts, who connected at a 35 percent clip from the floor (19-for-54).
Bowdoin was ahead 14-8 after the 1st quarter, but UNE struck for the initial 16 of the 2nd to grab a 24-14 cushion. Franzen canned three triples and accounted for 11 points in the stretch. The difference was trimmed to 29-22 at halftime.
Cavallaro opened the 3rd with a three-pointer, and answered a hoop by Jones with another, to make it 35-24 in favor of the Nor'easters. While the Polar Bears put the next nine on the board, the deficit was back at five (41-36) through 30 minutes.
During the deciding span in the 4th, Jones tallied eight to fuel Bowdoin's move in front (56-48) with 2:09 left. Meanwhile, UNE went 2-of-7 from the field and lost five turnovers in the swing.
Next up the Nor'easters will be a home date with No.7 Tufts University on Tuesday (7 p.m.). UNE isn't done with the Polar Bears yet, either, as the teams will square off again on the same court in nine days.
Earlier in the afternoon, Colby College picked up a 59-53 win over Nazareth College to join Bowdoin with a 2-0 start to the year.
