Jarrett Henault accounted for six touchdowns as the University of New England came back from a first-quarter deficit to defeat Curry College 55-43 in its season finale on Saturday afternoon.
The Nor'easters finish the year at 4-5 overall and 2-4 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play. Curry fell to 3-6 overall and 1-5 in league play to end the season.
The Colonels pulled in front 14-7 with 4:43 to go in the first quarter after Charlie Stanton hit Gabe DeSouza with a seven-yard touchdown pass.
Jack Mahoney took the ensuing kickoff 94 yards to the house to tie game at 14 through a period. Mahoney scored touchdowns three different ways (kick return, rushing, and receiving) in the victory.
Henault tossed three touchdowns and ran in for another as UNE outscored Curry 26-7 in the second quarter and led 40-21 at the half. The quarterback ran in from two yards out to start the period and, after a blocked extra point, the Nor'easters led 20-14.
Shane LaPorte hauled in a nine-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 27-14 with 8:54 to play in the first half.
Nick Lombard forced a fumble on the next possession by Curry and
Nick Scarfo recovered to give UNE the ball on the Colonels' 30-yard line. Two plays later Henault found
Brett Miller for a 23-yard touchdown as the Nor'easters led 34-14.
Following a Curry touchdown, UNE used a long 12-play, 73-yard drive ending on a 22-yard touchown catch by Mahoney to pull in front 40-21 in the final minute of the second quarter.
After a high-scoring second, neither team was able to put points on the board in the third quarter. Stanton connected with DeSouza for another score to begin the fourth and close the gap to 40-29, but that is as close as Curry would get. The Colonel quarterback finished with 550 yards through the air and five touchdowns.
Jakob Rivers grabbed a 27-yard touchdown pass from Henault on UNE's next drive. The Nor'easter defense stopped Curry on fourth down and took over on the 50. Mahoney scored his third touchdown of the afternoon as he scampered in on the first play of the drive as the visitors pull ahead 55-29 with 9:27 to play.
Curry attempted to mount a late comeback as DeSouza caught another touchdown and Stanton ran in for a score to trim the deficit to 55-43 with 4:45 remaining.
Henault finished an efficient 20-for-27 through the air for 286 yards and five touchdowns. He also had 83 yards and a score on the ground. Mahoney had 88 rushing yards and caught two passes for 35 yards. Miller led the UNE receivers with four grabs for 107 yards and two touchdowns.
DeSouza hauled in a game high 14 catches for 158 yards and four touchdowns. Richard Sullivan also had 158 receiving yards on nine catches for the Colonels.
Antonio Giano had six tackles and a forced fumble for the Nor'easters.
Keegan Stanton-Meas also had six stops and an interception. James Nyamwaya had 16 tackles including 1.5 for a loss for Curry.
