WESTON, Mass. -- The University of New England women's swimming team began its 2021-22 campaign on Saturday (Oct. 9), defeating the University of Saint Joseph (195-91) and falling to Regis College (183-93) in a double-dual meet at the Regis Pool.

The Nor'easters received 1st-place efforts out of Taylor Gibson and Katie Durrua on the day. Gibson won the 1000-yard freestyle in 12:52.54, less than two seconds ahead of Thalia Bowie of Regis. Durrua claimed the 500 freestyle (5:51.74) comfortably; rookie teammate April Falstad took second in the event.

UNE also gained runner-up points from Haley Griffin, Korianne Moore, and Annika Doeppers. Griffin did it twice; her 1:05.53 in the 100 backstroke was just 0.52 seconds back of Regis' Kyleigh Boatwright, and she was edged in the 200 freestyle (2:12.53) by 0.70 and the touch of Laylan Harris.

Moore competed in the second-closest race of the meet -- the 50 backstroke (33.13) -- separated by a mere 0.18 seconds behind Cecelia Adelfio of Regis. Doeppers clocked 1:15.80 in the 100 breaststroke to wind up just over a second back of Olivia Luhnau of the Pride.

The Nor'easters were second in both relays, as well. The 200 medley group of Griffin, Doeppers, Mary Washlick, and Durrua posted a time of 2:06.03, while Griffin, Durrua, Falstad, and Olivia Roy teamed up as the 200 freestyle team to secure a time of 1:54.45.

UNE will take part in the Husson University Relays in two weeks.
