Golden Bears rally to clip UNE, 3-1

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Western New England University overcame a hot start by the University of New England to pick up at 3-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball result (17-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-16) on Tuesday night (Oct. 5) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Golden Bears (8-7, 2-2 CCC) featured a very balanced attack, with six players between nine and seven kills. Hailey Sell had nine winners, 38 assists, and nine digs. Sarah Scott, Olivia Hall, and Isabelle Petty all had nine kills, as well, while Scott and Hall went for 20 and 11 digs, respectively. Abigail Bundy and Alissa Hawes put down seven kills. Petty factored in four of the team's seven blocks.

For the Nor'easters (6-9, 1-3 CCC), Viktoria Pavlyuk totaled a match-best 16 kills. Lauren Davenport registered a double-double of 15 kills and 14 digs. Addie Miller framed 30 assists and Paige Weatherbee collected 20 digs.

UNE came out clicking, hitting at a rate of .346 in the 1st set while serving up six aces. Western New England, however, led near the midway mark at 12-9. From there, the Nor'easters rattled off 12 of the next 14 to surge in front (21-14). Pavlyuk tallied three kills and Miller dropped in three aces during the stretch, and back-to-back winners by Davenport eventually closed out the stanza.

The Golden Bears were ahead the entirety of the 2nd, and used a 6-1 run to separate to a 13-7 cushion. UNE couldn't get any closer than four (18-14, 19-15, 24-20) the rest of the way. The 3rd included another 6-1 span for a 13-7 WNEU advantage, but the Nor'easters pulled back within one at 16-15. The visitors finished strong, though, with two kills apiece from Hall and Bundy and a couple aces by Taylor Deluga.

Western New England gained the edge in the 4th at 5-4, and extended a 16-11 lead with four consecutive kills from Hall and Sell to take full control.

UNE will stay at home for a Saturday tri-match with Bowdoin College (11 a.m.) and Rhode Island College (3 p.m.).
