Gordon gets straight-set result over UNE

Statistics

WENHAM, Mass. -- Gordon College received 19 kills from Valerie Nilan on the way to a 3-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball decision (25-10, 26-24, 25-22) against the University of New England on Wednesday night (Oct. 27) at the Bennett Center.

Nilan finished with a hitting percentage of .586 in the match, while factoring in all but one of the Fighting Scots' seven blocks. Gordon (13-9, 5-3 CCC) had another eight kills come from Macie Carroll, and 38 assists produced by Kate Howe. Defensively, Joey Keltner totaled 26 digs and Howe added 10 more.

The Nor'easters slip to 8-15 overall and 1-7 in league action, setting the stage for Friday's regular season finale at Nichols College with the final spot in the postseason tournament on the line.

Lauren Davenport topped UNE with nine kills, and Viktoria Pavlyuk contributed six. Davenport and Addie Miller -- who had 18 assists -- both recorded nine digs, while Paige Weatherbee led the back row with 17 digs.

The hosts registered at attacking clip of .412 to coast in the opening frame. Things were quite different in the 2nd, as Gordon gained its first edge at 22-21 in the midst of a 6-1 spurt. The Nor'easters pulled even at 24-all, but kills by Nilan and Emily Schneider put away the set. UNE had been up by as many as five (14-9), and then 20-17.

The visitors built a 5-1 cushion to start in the 3rd, relinquished the advantage with five straight points by the Fighting Scots, and proceeded to rattle off a 12-4 run to assume a 17-10 lead. Gordon, however, answered with 10 of the ensuing 11 points to seize the edge (20-18). Points from Pavlyuk and Davenport brought the set back level at 22-all, only to see Nilan, Schneider, and Carroll put down winners to seal it.
