BIDDEFORD, Maine –
Sam Barone scored the game-winning goal with four seconds left in the first half to help the University of New England to a 2-0 victory over Salve Regina University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon.
With the victory, the Nor'easters (11-5-1, 7-2-0 CCC) clinched a home game for the quarterfinal round of the CCC Tournament, which begins Saturday. Salve Regina (6-11-1, 2-6-1 CCC) will enter the postseason as one of the final two seeds in the field.
UNE controlled possession for much of the game, but stellar goalkeeping by Georgia Drake, kept the Nor'easters off the board until late in the first half. Drake had all eight of her saves in the first 45 minutes of play.
Hannah Cottis wrestled the ball away from a defender and found
Bella Reil, who fed it ahead of the defense to Barone. Barone tucked a shot just between Drake and the right post to put UNE in front at the half.
