BEVERLY, Mass. -- Endicott College raced out to a two-set lead and notched a 3-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball result (25-6, 25-13, 20-25, 25-19) against the University of New England on Wednesday night (Oct. 13) at MacDonald Gymnasium.
The Gulls (13-7) maintain a share of the league lead, at 4-0, while the Nor'easters (7-11) dip back to 1-4 in CCC action.
Amanda Gilbert paced a balanced Endicott attack with 10 kills, and Riley Donahue had eight. Colleen McAvoy went for eight kills, as well, doing so with a .538 hitting percentage. McAvoy also recorded three service aces and factored in each of the team's six blocks (2 solo). Lauren McGrath picked up a double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs. Emma Ruel guided the defensive effort with 12 digs.
For UNE,
Stephanie Erickson tallied six kills, a couple aces, and a solo block.
Mary Haley added five kills.
Paige Weatherbee and
Sara Authier both accumulated eight digs, and Authier was responsible for 12 assists.
The Gulls registered 40 of the initial 50 points in the match. Things shifted in the 3rd set, though, as the visitors used a 13-4 run to assume an 18-10 advantage. The hosts rallied as close as two (20-18), but the Nor'easters were able to make a dent in the overall deficit.
Eight unanswered by UNE in the middle of the 4th put the ultimate result even more in question, but Endicott countered the 14-10 Nor'easter edge with eight in a stretch of nine to take control (18-15).
UNE will visit the University of Southern Maine on Saturday for matches with the Huskies and Rhode Island College. The Nor'easters swept both squads earlier in the season.
