Nor’easters comeback falls short against Suffolk

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England scored two second-half goals to trim the deficit to one late, but were unable to complete the comeback in a 5-3 loss to Suffolk in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's soccer action at Barbara J. Hazard Field on Tuesday afternoon.
 
In the 76th minute, after just entering the game, Chris Caiazzo was able to leap higher than the Rams' keeper and head a long pass off the foot of Gavin Mason into the goal to cut the visitor's lead to 4-2 [Watch]. Just under two minutes later, Brenden Waterman served a free kick into the box off a Suffolk defender. Alex Woodworth was able to boot home the loose ball as UNE pulled within one. [Watch]
 
The Nor'easters (1-11-1, 0-5-0 CCC) had many chances down the stretch, including two close calls by John Upton late, but were unable to pull any closer. Nigel Leo put the game out of reach with his second goal of the day in the closing seconds.
 
Leo got the scoring started for the Rams (7-5-1, 3-2-0 CCC) in the second minute of action as he was able to redirect a pass off the head of Brady Sorensen. A corner kick off the foot of Leo was headed in by Tommy Handelsman to extend the lead to 2-0 at the 15:24 mark of the first.
 
In the 20th minute, a Suffolk defender attempted to get the ball back to the goalkeeper, but Luke Gould was able to slide in to score on the loose ball make the score 2-1 [Watch]. Miguel Varela found Erik Van Even for a goal to make it a 3-1 advantage at the half. Van Even returned the favor in the 69th minute to give the Rams their largest lead of the day.
 
Suffolk had 10 shots in each half and held a 20-14 advantage in attempts and 13-9 on target. Tom Bennett had six saves in the victory. Sean McCarthy and Triston O'Hagan each made four stops for UNE.
 
The Nor'easters return to the field on Friday night on the road at Curry at 7 p.m.
