BIDDEFORD, Maine -- University of New England Director of Athletics
Heather Davis has announced on Tuesday (June 16) that head softball coach Dan Letellier has resigned.
"I have really enjoyed my time at UNE, and I'm thankful for all the department administrators over the years who gave me the opportunity to be a Division III head coach," Letellier shared. "I think we did a good job of building UNE Softball into one of the top-tier programs in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, and I'm proud of all that we accomplished. It's a reflection of the commitment and all the hard work that our student-athletes put in. We were fortunate to have some great ones lead by example when we took over, which laid the foundation and set a standard for our success. I really appreciate all of our student-athletes and assistant coaches, both past and present, and thank them for all they gave to this program to get it where it is today."
Letellier led the Nor'easters for 11 seasons, amassing a 229-166-2 mark over the first 10 years (no games were played in 2020). His teams posted a winning record eight times, including five with at least a .615 percentage. One of those seasons, 2011, featured a known program record 29 victories and a highlight of 19 wins in-a-row.
His squads totaled a 124-64 record (.660) in CCC action, and collected the program's second conference title in 2012 with a four-game sweep of the competition to reach the NCAA Championship. UNE made the postseason tournament every year, finished in the top four of the league standings on seven occasions, and twice was the No.2 seed entering the playoffs. The Nor'easters reached at least the semifinals five times, and made a second finals appearance in 2019. Letellier was voted CCC Coach of the Year in both 2011 and 2019.
UNE shared the runner-up trophy in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Championship during the 2011 campaign. The 2012 conference championship team also became the University's second to triumph in NCAA tournament play -- 11-8 in an elimination contest with Husson -- before getting knocked out by nationally-ranked SUNY Cortland (1-0).
"I want to thank Dan for his 11 years of dedication to our softball student-athletes," commented Davis. "His programs found success on the diamond, in the classroom, and in the community. Under Dan's leadership, the softball student-athletes were excellent representatives of the Division III philosophy and of UNE."
Kim Lorenc will serve as Interim Head Softball Coach for the 2020-21 year. Lorenc has been Letellier's assistant coach for the past two seasons.
