BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Massachusetts Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team held on for an 11-9 victory over the University of New England in non-conference action at UNE Blue Bolt Field on Saturday afternoon.
Teddy Corcoran broke a 2-2 tie with 3:48 left in the first quarter to give the Engineers (3-1) a lead through one. MIT scored the first three goals of the second to open their largest advantage of the day at 6-2. UNE (4-1) would grab momentum back to close the half as goals by
Collin Morrow,
Garett Bozek, and
Donovan Connor trimmed the deficit to 6-5 at the intermission.
The teams traded goals the entire second half and the Nor'easters could never pull closer than one. Down 9-7 with 8:07 to play, MIT was assessed a two-minute non-releasable penalty.
Zach Bossi buried his 11
th of the season to close the gap to one. The Nor'easters had three more shots during the man-up opportunity, including a chance by
Andrew Loya that caromed off the post, but were unable to knot the score.
Bozek led the UNE offense with four points with a pair of goals and assists. Morrow added two goals and an assist while Connor scored twice.
Adam Race picked up six ground balls to go with five caused turnovers.
Liam Miller, James Santoro, and Andy Shin each had two goals for the Engineers. Andrew Johnson had three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Andrew Palleiko was 10-of-18 on face offs and had six ground balls.
UNE outshot MIT narrowly at a 36-33 clip overall, but the Engineers were more accurate with 23-19 shots on goal. Lukas Drezler-Bruce made 10 saves to backstop the victory.
Sam MacKenzie stopped 12 shots in the loss.
The Nor'easters will close out their six-game homestand on Wednesday, March 11 against Emerson at 6 p.m.
