SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Western New England University scored the game's last 10 points to defeat the University of New England, 58-49, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action Saturday afternoon (Feb. 15) at the AHL Center.
The Golden Bears (20-4, 13-2 CCC) clinch at least a share of the regular-season title, and with both results versus the Nor'easters (17-6, 11-3 CCC), will enter the upcoming postseason tournament on the top line.
UNE trailed 46-37 in the 4th before a 12-2 run flipped the visitors in front (49-48) with 3:03 remaining.
Ashley Coneys accounted for eight in the stretch, including the free throw for the lead.
However, Lauren Chadwick restored the WNEU advantage with a jumper on the ensuing trip (50-49). After UNE misses, a Meghan Orbann three-pointer and basket by Courtney Carlson extended the cushion on consecutive possessions.
Emily Farrell led the Golden Bears with 19 points, while Carlson posted a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds. The hosts controlled a 49-34 margin on the glass.
For the Nor'easters, Coneys tallied 17 points and nine rebounds.
Sadie Nelson registered eight points, and
Jocelyn Chaput notched six points with 11 boards.
Nelson opened the match with back-to-back treys as UNE scored the initial eight, but soon things were level at 11-all. The lead changed hands seven times over the next seven minutes, before Western New England scored seven of the last eight (5 by Farrell) to gain a 27-22 edge at the half. The visitors made just 2-of-14 field goals in the 2nd period.
The gap swelled to 39-26 at the 3:30 mark of the 3rd quarter, only to see the Nor'easters respond with nine unanswered (39-35). The difference was seven after 30 minutes, though, as Julia Quinn knocked down a late three-pointer to halt the run.
UNE is slated to visit Gordon College (9-5 CCC) on Wednesday.
