WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – #10 University of New England scored five times in the first period on its way to a 10-4 victory over Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe Western New England in men's hockey action at the Olympia Ice Center on Friday. It marks the third time this season the Nor'easters have scored 10 goals in a game.
Liam Darcy buried a shorthanded goal 10:50 into the opening period to begin the scoring for UNE, and
Jimmy Elser extended the lead to 2-0 later in the frame. The Nor'easters (15-4-3, 11-2-2 CCC) scored their final three goals of the period within a span of just 50 seconds. Bloom put in a power play goal with 1:56 left to play, before
Jovan Zimmerman and
Ryan Burr added tallies to make it 5-0.
Western New England (3-17-2, 1-13-1 CCC) got on the board in the opening minute of the second as Corey Kennedy scored his first of two in the game.
Brett Mecrones and
Jake Fuss popped in back-to-back goals to extend the UNE advantage to 7-1 with 10:06 left in the period. Demitrios Stefanou and Kennedy added scores for the Golden Bears to trim the deficit to 7-3 through two.
Marko Bohatiuk brought Western New England within three early in the final period, but the Nor'easters would not allow another score the rest of the night.
Liam Neuman,
Austin Morgan, and Bloom rounded out the scoring for UNE.
Tate Sproxton made 21 saves to earn the victory in net. Kyle Carducci made eight saves and allowed four goals over the opening 18:26 for Western New England. Colten Lancaster finished the game and had 28 stops.
Seven Nor'easters recorded multi-point games, with three apiece coming from Bloom (2g), Morgan (2a), Mecrones (2a), and
Tyler Seltenreich (3a). Burr, Neuman, and Darcy had two points.
Both teams return to the ice tomorrow night at the Harold Alfond Forum at 7 p.m.
