DUDLEY, Mass. -- Ashley Coney notched a double-double that included a season-high 20 points to pace the University of New England in a 72-51 victory over Nichols College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 1).
Winners of four in-a-row, the Nor'easters (16-4, 10-1 CCC) maintain their one-game lead atop the league standings heading into Wednesday's home date versus Endicott College (8-3 CCC). Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
Coneys equaled a career-best with 13 rebounds, which aided a 57-40 cushion for UNE on the glass.
Sadie Nelson and
Abby Cavallaro contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Jocelyn Chaput recorded nine points, eight caroms, and five assists, and
Allie Goodman supplied seven points along with 12 rebounds.
The visitors took the lead for good when Nelson canned consecutive three-pointers late in the 2nd quarter, and sat on a 23-22 edge at intermission. A 9-0 run near the middle of the 3rd, featuring five from Cavallaro and four by Nelson, pushed the gap to 15 (42-27).
Coneys tallied 16 points following halftime, as the Nor'easters shot 44 percent from the field and only committed one turnover. During the opening 20 minutes, UNE hit just 26.5 percent of its attempts and lost possession 11 times.
For the Bison (5-14, 3-8 CCC), Isabella Nerney had 11 points, while both Ciarri Formby-Lavertu and Leandra Ortiz posted nine. Nichols was limited to 27 percent shooting accuracy in the contest.
