NEWPORT, R.I. -- An 11-0 spurt in just 2:02 during the latter stages of the 2nd half vaulted the University of New England past Salve Regina University for a 77-70 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball victory on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 25) at Rodgers Rec. Center.
The Nor'easters trailed by as many as six (43-37, 50-44, 61-55) in the final stanza, and the deficit was three (63-60) with 7:06 remaining. But five quick points by
Alex Kravchuk spurred the deciding run that left the visitors with a 71-63 advantage at the 4:41 mark.
The Seahawks were within four (73-69) as 1:51 showed on the clock, only to see an
Avery DeBrito basket bump the margin right back up.
After shooting 48 percent in the initial frame, the hosts made just 29.6 percent (8-for-27) following the break. Meanwhile, UNE dropped in half of its 30 field-goal tries in the 2nd period to complete the season sweep of SRU.
Kravchuk and
Siddiq Canty topped the Nor'easters (10-8, 4-5 CCC) with 18 points apiece, and
Ray Evans tossed in a personal-best 13 off the bench. DeBrito ended with 11 points, seven boards, and five assists.
Ric Castillo secured a game-high eight rebounds.
For Salve Regina (7-10, 4-5 CCC), Mikey Spencer totaled 17 points and seven caroms. Cameron Collins and Chris Peasley each added 13 points, and Kevin Kelly supported with 11.
The 1st half featured 12 lead-changes and seven ties, with UNE holding the largest edge at six (15-9) one time. The Seahawks, however, settled on a 40-37 lead at intermission.
The Nor'easters get back to work on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) at home versus Wentworth Institute of Technology.
