PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – For the second night in-a-row, the No.9 University of New England men's ice hockey team dominated from start-to-finish on its way to a 9-0 victory over Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe No.12 Salve Regina University at the Portsmouth Abbey on Saturday evening. The Nor'easters (13-3-1, 9-1-0 CCC) out-scored the nationally-ranked squad 18-0 over the weekend series sweep, including 11 power-play goals.
Jeff Eppright started the scoring with a power-play goal 5:57 into the opening period.
Ryan Bloom added another extra-man score in the first. UNE tallied six power-play goals on the night.
The Nor'easters exploded for a five-goal period in the second frame to break the game open. Eppright put in his second at the 11:47 mark of the period. Former Seahawk,
Brent Hill, and
Jared Christy extended the lead to 5-0 with goals just 36 seconds apart.
Jimmy Elser and
Chad Merrell added scores as UNE took a 7-0 lead heading into the final 20 minutes.
Eppright got his third on the advantage in closing period, and
Austin Morgan capped the rout.
Seven Nor'easters tallied multi-point games, led by Eppright, Bloom, and
Jake Fuss with four assists that matched the program single-game record. Elser, Hill, Christy, and
Dimitris Jones each had two points.
Ben Churchfield (40 minutes) and
Tate Sproxton (20) only needed to make a combined 14 saves in the shutout.
For Salve (10-6-1, 6-3-1 CCC), Tony Rehm allowed four goals and stopped 22 over the first 30:18 of the night. Louis-Felix St. Jean completed the game with five allowed and 16 saves.
The Nor'easters return home for the 4th Annual Teddy Bear Toss Game on Friday, Jan. 31 against Curry at 7 p.m.
