BIDDEFORD, Maine – A seven-goal third period powered #9 University of New England to a 9-0 victory over #12 Salve Regina in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's ice hockey clash on Friday night at the Harold Alfond Forum.
It was the widest margin of triumph against a nationally-ranked opponent for the Nor'easters (12-3-1, 8-1-0 CCC), who extended their lead atop the league standings to four points.
Ryan Bloom started off the night with his team-leading ninth goal of the year.
Tyler Seltenreich redirected a shot by
Brett Mecrones into the net as UNE led 2-0 after a period.
The score remained until the 1:14 mark of the third, when Seltenreich scored again.
Austin Morgan made it 4-0 just over two minutes later. Following a short break in the scoring action,
Chris Jones put in a power play tally, one of five for the Nor'easters over the final 7:02 of play.
A major penalty just under a minute later gave UNE an extra-man for nearly the rest of regulation. Jones added his second of the night to extend the lead to 6-0. Mecrones,
Aaron Aragon, and
Justin Dixson each scored within a 1:38 of each other as the Nor'easters continued to pour it on. UNE outshot the visitors 19-2 in the 20 minutes.
Seltenreich (2g, 1a), Mecrones (1g, 2a), Bloom (1g, 2a), and
Liam Darcy (3a) each had three points on the night. Jones, Dixson (1g, 1a), and
Alex Sheehy (2a) also had multi-point outings.
Ben Churchfield earned his third shutout of the season for the Nor'easters, who outshot the Seahawks 47-23 on the night. Tony Rehm had 38 saves for Salve Regina (10-5-1, 6-2-1 CCC).
The teams are back in action tomorrow night at 7:05 at the Portsmouth Abbey in Portsmouth, R.I.
