LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College finished the 1st half on an 11-4 spurt and began the 2nd with a 28-9 run to separate from the University of New England on the way to a 98-60 men's basketball result on Thursday night (Jan. 2) at Alumni Gymnasium.
Kody Greenhalgh powered the Bobcats (6-3) early on, hitting 6-of-8 from downtown before intermission to total 20 of his 23 points. Jeff Spellman added 16 points and five assists in the game, and Omar Sarr went for 11 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocks, including a near double-double in the opening period. James Mortimer was a fourth in double figures with 10 points.
All 14 players that entered the contest found their way into the scoring column for the hosts, who shot 49.4 percent from the field and knocked down 16-of-36 from long range. Bates also controlled the boards by a margin of 50-30.
Siddiq Canty topped the Nor'easters (6-5) with 12 points, and
Blake Smith chipped in with 12 off the bench.
Alex Kravchuk had 11 points and five caroms for the visitors, who connected at just a 36.5 percent clip.
Three triples in the initial moments put UNE up, 11-9, but 10 unanswered by the Bobcats flipped the cushion. The margin was 42-30 at the break.
The Nor'easters resume their Commonwealth Coast Conference schedule on Tuesday at Roger Williams University.
