BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Western New England University chalked up a 53-42 result against the University of New England as the top two women's basketball squads in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) faced off Saturday afternoon (Jan. 18) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Golden Bears (13-3, 6-1 CCC) scored the last five points of the 2nd quarter to gain the lead for good at 23-19, and never let the Nor'easters (12-4, 6-1 CCC) back within one possession.
Lauren Chadwick tallied 11 of her game-high 15 points following halftime to pace the visitors. Courtney Carlson went for 11 points and six rebounds, and Emily Farrell tossed in 10 points. Meghan Orbann added nine points and a match-best eight boards, helping WNEU to a 36-32 edge on the glass.
Western New England shot 42 percent from the field in the contest, while UNE connected on just 29 percent, which included 3-of-22 from long range.
Kaylee Beyor and
Abby Cavallaro both registered 10 points for the Nor'easters, and Beyor shared the team-high of seven rebounds with
Ashley Coneys.
Jocelyn Chaput contributed seven points.
The hosts led 10-8 after one period, and answered a 10-3 WNEU run with six straight to grab a 19-18 advantage. The Golden Bears finished the half strong to move in front, and built their cushion up to nine (34-25) early in the 3rd stanza. The last two of the penultimate frame and the first four of the 4th then established a 44-31 margin. UNE recorded the next seven to close the gap back to six (44-38) with 4:37 remaining, but could not make up any more ground.
The Nor'easters are slated to entertain Gordon College (5-2 CCC) on Wednesday with 5:30 p.m. tip.
