BIDDEFORD, Maine – Western New England defeated the University of New England 50-38 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Football action at UNE Blue Storm Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Bears improve to 3-1, 1-0 in CCC play while UNE falls to 2-2, 0-1 in conference.
Western New England ran through the UNE defense for 313 yards and four touchdowns led by Jamyre Soberanis with 168 yards and three scores. Brendan Smith also threw for three touchdowns through the air on 16-of-28 passing and 230 yards.
Brian Peters was 31-of-41 passing for the Nor'easters with 292 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Ryan Gaboury hauled in seven passes for 77 yards and two scores.
Cobey Johnson added eight catches for 78 yards and a TD.
Peyton Phillips had seven receptions for 72 yards and a score.
The Golden Bears easily worked their way down the field on a 10-play, 81-yard drive culminating a four-yard TD pass by Smith to Adam Razza to go ahead 7-0 out of the gate. After at three-and-out by UNE, the Nor'easters forced a WNE punt that was tipped by
Zach Beauvais to setup the offense near midfield.
Kevin Heintz nailed a 26-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3. UNE held the Golden Bears on fourth down on the ensuing drive. Peters found Gaboury for a 15-yard touchdown on a 3
rd-and-9 early in the second to put the Nor'easters in front 10-7 with 14:06 to play until the half.
Things would go south for UNE from there as Western New England scored touchdowns on each of its final three possessions of the half to take a 27-10 lead at the break. EJ Dudley scored first on a five-yard rush. Smith hit Razza for a 40-yard scamper and Soberanis on the final score of the half.
Soberanis rushed in from 12-yards out on the first WNE drive of the second half. UNE answered with a quick six-play, 75-yard drive capped by a TD pass from Peters to Johnson to trim into the lead at 34-17 with 8:38 left in the third. A field goal and another touchdown run by Soberanis gave the visitors their largest advantage of the afternoon at 44-17 heading into the fourth.
A roughing the kicker penalty gave UNE new life to start the fourth. Peters hit Phillips for catches of 34 yards, a five-yard TD, and the ensuing two-point conversion to make the score 44-25. WNE answered quickly with a 49-yard pass to Byron Jones followed by a 22-yard touchdown run by Soberanis to extend back out to 50-25.
UNE finished the scoring off with an 11-yard TD grab by Gaboury and a two-yard run by
Douglas Harrison in the closing seconds.
Erich Keutmann had 12 tackles (nine solo) including a sack for the Bears. Jake Salera added nine tackles. Aaron Lamar and Jerry Woodard each had a pick.
DJ James made 10 stops (seven solo) to lead the UNE defense.
Antonio Giano had six tackles.
The Nor'easters visit Curry on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
