BIDDEFORD, Maine -- After surrendering a 12-3 run to drop the opening set, the University of New England women's volleyball team roared back to defeat the University of Maine-Fort Kent by a 3-1 margin (18-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-15) on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 21) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Nor'easters now carry their 9-1 overall record into the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener at Western New England University on Tuesday.
Three UNE players registered double-doubles that included career highs.
Katie Flynn put down 18 kills (CH) and had 20 digs, while
Sydney Christiansen lofted up 49 assists (CH) and dug up 15 of the opponent's attacks. In addition to 17 digs (CH),
Paige Simoneau notched a season-best 13 kills.
Katie Marsh served up a personal-high of seven aces to go with 26 digs, and
Molly Camelo added 10 digs.
Stephanie Erickson tallied 14 kills, which gives her 30 in the last two matches -- nearly half of her season-to-date through 10 outings.
The teams traded six-point spurts in the 2nd frame before the Nor'easters logged eight in-a-row to approach drawing even on the scoreboard; Flynn and Erickson split those points. UNE found itself down, 16-10, in the 3rd, until an 11-1 stretch turned things around. Marsh dropped in handful of service aces during the run, and Simoneau eventually finished off the stanza.
The Nor'easters were trailing by three (12-9) in the 4th, but closed with a 16-3 span that featured five winners by Simoneau.
For the Bengals (3-5), Rachel Nance led the team with 14 points behind 11 kills and a part of four blocks. Luse Lumas contributed nine kills and a match-high 27 digs, while Beatriz Garrido had 27 assists to pair with 15 digs. Kaylee Neher posted six aces and 17 digs.
