Golden goal tips RWU over Nor'easters, 3-2

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Jacob Grant scored with 3:08 elapsed in overtime to give the Roger Williams University Hawks a 3-2 win over the University of New England in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The game-winner came off a Hawks' set piece. Connor Edwards took the free kick and found Garrett Bolton, who headed the ball toward the middle of the box where Grant deposited it into the back of the net to send the visitors home triumphant.

RWU (3-2-2, 1-0-0 CCC) had rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit to force overtime. Michael Oliveira made the score 2-2 less than four minutes into the second frame when he bent a high shot just under the crossbar on a free kick from 22 yards out.

The two teams went back-and-forth in the first half. UNE's Callum Heaslewood notched the first goal of the afternoon, directing a low shot past RWU goalkeeper Edmund Geschickter. Roger Williams responded seven minutes later when Stathi Panagiotidis converted a penalty kick after UNE was whistled for a foul in the box. The Nor'easters jumped back out in front again when Tristan Wirth scored in the 29th minute off a feed from Colby Obrecht.

The Hawks had the better part of the stat sheet for the afternoon, finishing with advantages in shots (18-7) and corner kicks (7-1).

Geschickter needed two saves to pick up the win, while Will Shearon finished with six for UNE (3-3-1, 0-1-0 CCC).

The Nor'easters get back at it Tuesday when they host Westfield State University at 7 p.m.
