Nor'easters battle back to edge Lasell, 3-2

NEWTON, Mass. -- After falling behind two sets to one, the University of New England notched the first six points of both the 4th and 5th sessions to rally past Lasell University, 3-2 (21-25, 25-16, 28-30, 25-16, 15-5), in women's volleyball action Thursday night (Sep. 19) at the LU Athletic Center.

The Nor'easters continue their best start in over 23 seasons, improving to 8-1 on the year, while the Lasers drop to 3-8 overall.

UNE fell behind right out of the gate (11-2), but managed to lead at 15-13. The advantage was one (21-20) before Lasell chalked up the last five points to take the frame. The visitors started with a 6-1 spurt in the 2nd and cruised to the set, evening the match.

The Nor'easters rattled off eight in-a-row late in the 3rd to go up 24-21, however the Lasers staved off three set-points and even took a 25-24 edge. Four lead-changes later and Lasell was able to secure the set, but UNE never trailed the rest of the way to complete the comeback.

Stephanie Erickson dialed up 21.5 points to pace the Nor'easters, accumulating 16 kills, three aces, and a pair of solo blocks. Katie Flynn added 10 kills and 13 digs, while Paige Simoneau went for eight winners and four service aces. Micaela McNamara also registered eight kills. Sydney Christiansen tallied 38 assists to frame the attack, and Katie Marsh had a career-high 29 digs.

Lasell received 21 kills, 22 digs, and six aces from Kiana Perez Diaz, and 31 assists out of Jess Langan. Amanda DiLeonardo and Karissa Gaughan had 15 and 14 digs, respectively.

UNE will be back in Biddeford on Saturday (3 p.m.) to entertain the University of Maine-Fort Kent.
