Katie Flynn had team highs in both kills and digs as the University of New England defeated Colby College by a 3-1 margin (24-26, 25-19, 25-18, 25-21) in women's volleyball action at Wadsworth Gymnasium on Tuesday evening (Sep. 17).
The Nor'easters are off to their best start to a season in over 23 years (7-1), while the Mules fall back to 3-5 overall.
UNE had a four-point advantage in the opening set until six unanswered points by Colby turned things in favor of the hosts. The visitors rebounded in the 2nd frame, tallying 12 of the last 15 points to even the match at 1-all. UNE got out to a 14-7 cushion to take control of the 3rd, and an 8-1 start to the 4th set UNE ahead for good.
Flynn totaled 12 kills and 21 digs for the Nor'easters, while Christiansen added 11 kills, 10 digs, and 31 assists.
Molly Camelo and
Paige Simoneau were near double-doubles, as well -- Camelo went for nine winners and 11 digs, and Simoneau recorded eight kills to go with 13 digs.
Katie Marsh contributed 18 digs.
The Mules got 14 kills and three aces out of Nicole Petherbridge, and 10 kills with 22 digs from Elizabeth Middlebrook. Morgan Selby guided the attack with 31 assists, and combined with Blair Sullivan for another 23 digs (11 and 12).
UNE heads for Lasell University on Thursday.
