READING, Pa.
Cam Mann rushed in from five yards out with 1:32 to play to give the University of New England football team a 35-28 road victory over Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon. Both teams are now 1-1 on the young season.

The Nor'easters entered the fourth quarter with a 21-14 lead, but two plays later Darrius Sample found Neeko Scurlock for a 24-yard touchdown to tie the score with 14:07 left to play. UNE marched down the field on eight plays, capped by a seven-yard run by Devon Charles to grab the lead back. Brian Peters hit Cobey Johnson for 33 yards on a key third down play to help setup the score.

Alvernia knotted the game once again with 4:25 remaining as Malcom Carey trotted in for his third touchdown of the day from 13 yards out. Carey finished with 30 carries for 171 yards.

UNE began the game-winning drive on its own 39, but was quickly in Golden Wolves territory after a nine-yard pass from Peters to Brett Miller and a 25-yard rush by Mann. Peyton Phillips hauled in a 14-yard catch on 3rd-and-6 to put the Nor'easters inside the Alvernia 10-yard line. After a four-yard rush by Charles, Mann went in for the winning score.

The Golden Wolves would not lay down easily as Sample connected with Scurlock for 30 yards on a 4th-and-13 in the final minute to put the host on the UNE 17. Two plays later Riley Ray sacked Sample for a nine-yard loss as the Nor'easters held on for the win.

Each team turned the ball over on their first possession of the game. A muffed snap by Alvernia punter Matthew Mitchell setup UNE deep in the enemy territory. Peters ran in from a yard out to get things started.

Carey scored his first of three touchdowns to start the second but a missed extra point kept UNE in front 7-6. Peters connected with Ryan Gaboury to extend the lead to 14-6. After turnovers by each team, Carey struck again and the Golden Wolves converted for two-point to tie the game 14-14 with 1:20 left to play in the half.

The Nor'easters needed just 46 seconds to go 60 yards as Peters ran it in from a yard out to put UNE in front 21-14 at the half, a lead that would stand until the fourth quarter.

Peters threw for a career-best 340 yards, completing 25-of-31 attempts. He finished with two scores on the ground, one through the air and two interceptions. Gaboury was the recipient of most of the catches with nine for 138 yards. Johnson added four catches for 79 yards. Charles (63 yards) and Mann (48 yards) led the UNE ground attack.

Sample had 166 yards passing and a score for Alvernia. Scurlock brought in eight receptions and 112 yards.

Keegan Stanton-Meas paced the UNE defense with 13 tackles (nine solo) and an interception. GianCarlo Diaz had four tackles, a sack, forced fumble, and fumble recovery. Myles Brodie had five tackles to go with a forced fumble and two pick for Alvernia. Ty Morris and Tajon Whiten made seven stops each.

The Nor'easters return home against Castleton on Saturday, Sept. 21. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
