Nor'easters top St. Joe's in opener, 3-0

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Paige Simoneau and Katie Flynn combined for 19 kills as the University of New England women's volleyball squad overcame a slow start to sweep Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-9), on Friday evening (Aug. 30) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Nor'easters (1-0) trailed at 13-9 in the opening set, but stormed back for a 17-14 advantage. UNE then put down three blocks in the midst of a 5-0 spurt that established a 24-17 cushion. The hosts closed the 2nd frame with a 16-3 run and lead the whole way in the 3rd stanza.

Flynn added a match-best 15 digs for UNE, while Molly Camelo totaled 11 more. Sydney Christiansen racked up 24 assists to go with six winners.

For the Monks (0-1), Kelsey Bickford tallied seven kills and Hannah Holden registered 10 assists. Madison Provencher accumulated 12 digs.

The Nor'easters are back at it on Saturday with matches against the University of Southern Maine (12 p.m.) and Maine Maritime Academy (4 p.m.).
