UNE ties Maine Maritime 1-1 to begin season

CASTINE, Maine – The University of New England and Maine Maritime played to a 1-1 tie on Friday night at Ritchie Field to begin the 2019 men's soccer season.
 
Cody Kennedy fed Lee Esposito for a goal in the 13 minute to put the Nor'easters on top early. A UNE red card in the 38th minute put the visitors down a man for the remainder of the night.
 
The Mariners knotted the game in the 71st minute on a score by Dalton Moore. Pieter Oudejans assisted on the tying goal.
 
The first overtime was quiet with the teams combining for just one shot. UNE held a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal in the final period, but neither team could break through.
 
Overall shots on the day favored the Nor'easters with a slim 16-14 margin. Camden Spear and Will Shearon logged 55 minutes apiece, making one and four saves, respectively. Trevor Gray stopped five shots over 65 minutes for the Mariners.
 
UNE opens its home schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 4 against Bowdoin at 7:30 p.m.
