Wentworth uses balanced attack to down UNE, 14-9

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Wentworth Institute of Technology defeated the University of New England 14-9 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's lacrosse action at UNE Blue Bolt Field on Tuesday evening.
 
Mitch Mullin scored two of his game-high five goals in the first quarter to help give the Nor'easters a 2-1 lead near the midway point of the opening period. Kyle Doner and Jacob Eldred both scored twice to close out the quarter as the Leopards jumped in front 5-2 after a frame.
 
The teams traded the entire second quarter and Wentworth (5-8, 2-2 CCC) took an 8-5 advantage into halftime. The Leopards came out firing in the third, scoring the first four, to open their largest lead at 12-6 through three.
 
UNE (5-6, 0-2 CCC) was unable to score on any of its six extra-man opportunities in the fourth quarter, but were able to pull as close as four goals late. The Leopards held the Nor'easters to 1-of-10 on extra-man opportunities on the night.
 
Ben Coakley had three goals to lead Wentworth. Four Leopards each scored two goals, including Doner, who also had a team-high two assists. Danny Bartosiewicz grabbed a game-high 10 ground balls.
 
Garett Bozek scored twice for UNE to go with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Alex Zadworny had one goal, tying him with Tyler Thomas (2010-13) atop the Nor'easters career leaderboard with 137 goals. Adam Race picked up seven ground balls and four caused turnovers.
 
UNE held a 41-27 advantage in shots, and 26-21 on goal. Randy Ryan made 17 saves in the victory. Sam MacKenzie added seven stops for UNE.
 
The Nor'easters are back in action at home on Saturday afternoon against Roger Williams at 4 p.m.
