BEVERLY, Mass. -- Endicott College defeated the University of New England by scores of 5-4 and 10-2 (5 innings) in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 13) at the EC Softball Complex.

The Gulls (18-4, 8-0 CCC) solidify their hold on the top spot in the league standings, now two games clear of the next in line. The Nor'easters (16-11, 5-3 CCC) will get right back to work on Sunday with a couple home games against Wentworth Institute of Technology.

UNE jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning of GAME 1 (EC 5-4), with a two-RBI single by Taylor Depot followed by an RBI-single from Alexis Kapsambelis.

After a solo home run by Peyton Atkins of Endicott in the bottom of the frame, the Nor'easters held that 3-1 edge until a four-run 5th by the Gulls. Two-run singles from Jamie Hopgood and Atkins flipped the hosts in front.

A hit-by-pitch on Sarah Lachapelle in the 7th got UNE one closer, but for the second time in the match, the visitors left the bases loaded with one out.

Atkins and Hopgood were joined by Olivia Odermatt and Carly Marchitto with two hits for EC. Laura Somerville registered the pitching decision in six innings of work, fanning six and surrendering one earned run before Maggie Oram chipped in with a save.

Kapsambelis led the Nor'easters with a couple hits. Sydnee Bessler gave up three earned runs in the setback, while striking out four against zero walks.

UNE stranded the bases loaded with one away in the top of the 1st of GAME 2 (EC 10-2), and Endicott put the first run across in the last half of the stanza on a wild pitch. Then a grand slam by Gina DeMilt and a solo shot from Hopgood plated five unearned runs for the Gulls in the 2nd as the lead went to 6-0.

The Nor'easter got a pair back in the 5th, including an RBI-double by Depot that scored Lachapelle after a double of her own. However, a three-run homer by Atkins put Endicott on the verge in the bottom of the inning, and a bases-loaded single from Adrianna Favreau ended it for the hosts.

DeMilt, Hopgood, and Atkins all tallied two hits for the Gulls, who got the five-inning pitching decision from Michaela Hamill.

Melissa Sprague took the loss in the circle for UNE.
