BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team defeated the University of New England, 19-7, in non-conference action at UNE Blue Bolt Field on Tuesday night.
Jeff Powers led the way with four goals and one assist for the Polar Bears (2-0), who are receiving votes in the latest USILA Top 20 Poll. Nick Conway, Chris Fowler, and Jake Crossman each had three goals, and Will Murtagh notched three helpers. Jack O'Connor and Michael Covell combined for four saves (3 and 1).
Sam Carlin won 11-of-14 face-offs for the visitors and shared the team-high of seven ground balls with Pat Broughton.
After Bowdoin grabbed an early two-goal lead, the game remained close through 15 minutes at 4-2. The Polar Bears scored the first six of the second quarter, though, to take control of the game and held a 12-4 advantage at halftime. The gap extended to 17-5 through three quarters, and each team scored twice in the final period.
Adam Race and
Garett Bozek each had two goals for the Nor'easters (1-1), while Bozek's two assists were matched by
Zach Bossi.
Sam MacKenzie made nine saves over the first 41:09, and
Jake Kampner added four stops the rest of the way.
Jared Duffy collected a game-best nine ground balls.
UNE is back in action at home on Thursday (3 p.m.) against Plymouth State University.
