BIDDEFORD, Maine – A six-goal run spanning the end of the first quarter into the second, lifted the Colby men's lacrosse team over the University of New England, 14-7, in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at UNE Blue Bolt Field.
Following a goal in the opening minute by Colton Michel, the Nor'easters answered with scored by
Alec Beveridge and
Collin Morrow to jump ahead 2-1 at the 12:11 mark of the first. Lane Kadish put the Mules back in front with back-to-back goals.
Mitch Mullin knotted the score 3-3 late in the period with his 12
th score of the season.
Colby (4-3) took control from there as Jack Rickards scored with 1:39 to play in the first to put the visitors in front for good. The Mules tallied five-straight to open the second quarter, including two more by Rickards, who finished with a team-high six goals, as they built at 9-3 advantage.
The Nor'easters (5-4) drew within five at 11-6 with 1:56 left in the third following Morrow's second score of the afternoon, but were unable to close the gap further.
Kadish scored four points on three goals and an assist to go with three caused turnovers. Michel dished out three assists and a goal. Joe Paolatto was 19-for-23 on face-offs with 10 ground balls. C.J. Layton had seven stops to backstop the victory.
Adam Race paced the Nor'easter defense with nine ground balls and four caused turnovers. Sam Mackenzie made 15 saves for the hosts.
UNE opens Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Saturday afternoon at Western New England at 4 p.m.
