UNE drops Wheaton, 18-11, to open season

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England men's lacrosse team scored four unanswered goals at the start of second quarter to break away from Wheaton College (Mass.) on its way to an 18-11 victory to open the 2019 campaign at UNE Blue Bolt Field on Saturday afternoon.
 
Garett Bozek led the way for the Nor'easters with six goals and an assist. Alex Zadworny (two goals, four assists) and Alex York (three goals, three assists) each chipped in six points. Jason Erwin added two scores and two helpers in the victory.

UNE was down 3-2 before a goal by Zadworny with 6:07 left in the first tied the game after a quarter. York edged the hosts in front and Bozek scored three-in-a-row to push UNE ahead, 7-3. Erwin and York added late goals to make it 9-5 at halftime.
 
The Nor'easters continued extending the advantage in the second half, building their largest lead at 18-9 late in the fourth quarter.
 
UNE, which received 18 saves from Sam MacKenzie, made the most of its numerous extra-man opportunities, scoring five goals on 10 attempts. Adam Race contributed a strong defensive effort with six caused turnovers, and his seven ground balls were matched by rookie long-stick Jared Duffy, who won 9-of-14 face-offs.
 
Pete Chisholm had five goals to pace the visitors, who fall to 1-1 on the young season. Chandler Miller totaled 17 stops in the cage for Wheaton, and Troy Sliney went 16-for-23 at the face-off X with nine ground balls.
 
UNE returns home on Saturday, March 2 against Plymouth State University at 12 p.m.
