BOSTON -- Wentworth Institute of Technology defeated the University of New England by an overtime tally of 87-83 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 23) at Tansey Gymnasium.
The Leopards overcame a nine-point deficit down the stretch of regulation to take their first lead since 1-0 at 68-66 with 1:45 remaining, only to see the Nor'easters knot things at 71-all with 12 ticks left on a corner trey by
Drake Gavin. WIT had a runner in the lane to win it, but
Jackson McCoy came up with the rejection.
UNE was up, 75-74, nearing the midway mark of the extra session before Kevin Hernandez and Tommy Dooling canned back-to-back three-pointers to swing the edge for good. Wentworth netted points on six straight possessions to gain control.
Stephen Azums guided the Leopards (5-1, 1-0 CCC) with a double-double of 18 points and 19 rebounds. Kyle Henseler added 17 points and Dooling totaled 12. Hernandez notched 11 points and Trey Carrier had 10 more.
For the Nor'easters (4-2, 0-1 CCC), who fell for the first time in five outings,
Avery DeBrito had a game-high 19 points and five assists.

Siddiq Canty, McCoy, and Gavin finished with 13, 12, 11, and 10 points, respectively. McCoy and Canty shared the team high of seven caroms.
UNE next heads for Bowdoin College on Tuesday evening.
